Book Arts Workshops

Appropriate for beginners or experienced artists and with a cap of three people, these workshops ensure that you will have a complete understanding of the topic you want to learn. The small size allows each session to be tailored to your needs. My studio is equipped with a small book press, cutting mats, and weights in addition to ample workspace. For each workshop I will provide enough bookcloth and binder's board for a moderately sized book. Additionally, all sewing materials, blades, adhesives, backing and scrap materials will be available at no additional cost. All you will be required to bring is the paper of your choice for the body of the book and marbled paper for use as endpapers. Also, some fabric or cloth may be used to cover some structures, if you are interested in this, please let me know.

Please contact me with any questions you may have about the workshops listed below. Or contact me about custom-made work. I will collaborate with you to make the structure you want. I am also available for consultations for people with some book experience who may need a little extra help.
Portfolio Building

This workshop will help you build a custom-made portfolio for your prints,
drawings, photos or other materials. The portfolio will have folded inner flaps to keep materials in place and ties to keep them closed.

Allow 2 hours for this workshop. $75

Case-Bound Books
Have you ever wanted to make a "real" book? This workshop will cover how to turn paper, board, and cloth into a conventional book. You will learn how to fold the paper into signatures, sew the book block, design and construct the cover and finally case the book in. These books are excellent as journals or sketchbooks or as a structure for pre-existing artworks.

Allow 4 hours for this workshop. $125

Boxes (Round or Clamshell)
Boxes are simple structures designed to hold or protect books and artwork. They can also be used as distinctive enclosures for gifts or other objects. The round box (or scroll case) is a decoratively capped tube, while the clamshell style opens flat.

Allow 3 hours for this workshop. $125
Japanese Sidesewn Binding

A wonderful introduction to making books by hand, this simple yet elegant and versatile binding can be used to bind both folded and single sheets of paper. An excellent style for binding drawings, photo albums or printed materials.

Allow 2 1/2 hours for this workshop. $100
Exposed Spine Books

This book structure, also known as a Coptic Stitch, has a unique look. The
sewing that holds the book together is not covered so it becomes an integral part of the appearance of the book. Additionally, these books open flat so they are useful for drawing, watercolor, or display purposes. They are also appropriate for photo albums, or signature books.

Allow 3 hours for this workshop. $100
The Goosefish Press is no longer offering letterpress workshops.
